These remarkable shells, with their swirling patterns of blues, greens, and purples, are a testament to the animal’s long life.

Hout Bay and the surrounding Cape coastline have a deep and complex history with abalone. The shells have been used by humans for over 100,000 years for everything from tools to art, with archaeological discoveries of abalone shells used as paint pots found in caves east of Cape Town. While the claim that Hout Bay holds the largest and oldest shells in the world could not be confirmed, it is a fact that the region is home to some of the largest species of abalone in South Africa, and for generations, the community has had a profound connection to this marine treasure.

From the heart of Oudtshoorn, the “Ostrich Capital of the World,” comes the magnificent ostrich eggshell, a material with a story as rich and enduring as the land it comes from. Ostrich eggshells, found in archaeological sites dating back over 60,000 years in South Africa, have long been a symbol of life and sustenance.

Each shell is a testament to natural strength and durability, but it’s the beauty within its structure that Edge of the Earth unlocks. Using a unique style and technique, the artist transforms discarded shells into intricate mosaic pieces. The subtle, creamy hues of the shell are enhanced by various grout colors, creating a breathtaking visual texture. Every piece is a unique mosaic work of art, reflecting the artist’s skill and a deep connection to her African heritage.

From the abundant coastlines of South Africa, particularly the West Coast around Saldanha Bay and Hout Bay, comes the humble yet beautiful mussel shell. These shells, known for their natural blue-black sheen, are a testament to the thriving marine ecosystem.

In the hands of local artists, these shells are transformed into amazing mosaics with a unique technique. By preparing and arranging the individual shells, the artist creates stunning mosaics that showcase a spectrum of beautiful and vibrant colors. The final product is a testament to the beauty of the South African coast and the artistry that can be found in the most unexpected natural materials.

The artist’s mosaic work is a stunning celebration of natural materials and African artistry. Using a unique technique, they transform discarded mussel, Abalone / Pāua shell, and ostrich shell fragments into beautiful mosaic artworks of land and sea life. The mosaics, with their vibrant colors and intricate details, are featured on a variety of products including coasters, wine caddies, frames, and jewelry boxes. The artist also creates captivating abalone waterfalls and cell phone stands, showcasing the versatility and beauty of these shells. Each piece is a unique and vibrant work of art that tells a story of the artist’s unique style and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
